Our Flock
Laying Hens — Mixed Breed Flock
The hens free range over 1.5 acres of Buckinghamshire pasture with 24-hour outdoor access — they come inside at night on their own terms. The flock is scaling toward 350 birds and is registered with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). A 25mm netted run is being added to the site to maintain free-range status during any mandatory bird flu housing orders, meaning the birds keep their space and their welfare standard regardless of seasonal restrictions.
Mixed breed birds produce fertile eggs with strong genetic diversity — hardy stock that tends to result in good hatch rates and resilient chicks. An active cockerel runs with the flock year-round.
Quail
The quail flock is being established using a Brinsea 56EX incubator running up to 150 quail eggs per hatch. Quail are compact, productive birds well suited to small-scale farming — their eggs require no grading or stamping under UK regulations, which makes them straightforward to supply direct to shops and restaurants.
A local shop has already confirmed interest in regular quail egg supply. The plan is to grow the flock to meet consistent commercial demand, with hatching eggs available as stock allows.
Ducks
Ducks are part of the next phase of expansion at Barralier Farm. Duck eggs are exempt from the standard egg marketing regulations that apply to hen eggs — no stamping, no packing centre requirement — which makes them a practical addition for direct and retail sales alongside quail eggs.
Ducks are kept in a separate area of the land from the chickens and quail, which is standard biosecurity practice for waterfowl. Fertile duck hatching eggs will be listed in the shop once the flock is established and producing consistently. Local farm shop supply is the initial target.
Bees & Honey
The farm runs three hives on site, expanded from a single colony as the operation has grown. The bees are a working part of the farm — supporting pollination across the land and producing raw Buckinghamshire honey harvested and jarred here with no additives. The plan is to grow to ten or more hives over the next few years as the infrastructure develops.
Honey is available seasonally through the shop. The colonies are managed to the seasonal cycle with bee welfare as the priority — no unnecessary intervention and no artificial feeding.
